Sketching and drawing, at their best, reveal and confirm important things about ourselves, our values, our motives and our beliefs. Drawings are concrete statements about the artist's state of mind at a given point; they are records of thoughts and processes. However, great drawings and great art don't speak to the viewer's head, but to his heart and to his spirit. Can, or should, all drawings aspire to this? Of course not. But even a little thumbnail sketch can be beautiful and meaningful in fulfilling the purpose of its conception.
But I am particularly inclined to sketch people: my own friends, family and myself, as well as people I meet when I am traveling — people on trains and buses, in parks, plazas and cafés. I am especially inspired by urbanscapes. I draw every day. I keep moleskin journals, though sometimes I draw on brown paper bags, butcher paper or scrap paper and glue it in later. I use brown or black pens and china markers. When I travel to other countries, I sketch constantly, in order to archive and absorb what I am experiencing in a way that is more profound and personal than snapping a photo.
I suppose there are hundreds of filled-up sketchbooks stored in the archives of my mind. Six-year-old Serafina (drawing at left) and ten-year-old Elaina (drawing at right) often create their own artwork alongside their mother as she works. If I had to draw a distinction between working on paper versus working directly on the clay surfaces of my pots, other than the obvious difference, I would say that paper provides me with a greater window of time. I have the opportunity to contemplate and reflect on something a bit longer because I must translate my designs on the pottery before the clay has an opportunity to dry.
