With no palanca through family connections or money bribe for the union bureaucrats, Hilario had no way of even applying for a stable union teaching position in the public system. ” His only option then was to look for a job at a private school.

However, the year that Rocío planned to start, there were political problems at the Normal School that prevented her admission6. Although it didn’t have the same guaranteed job upon graduation, her mother advised her instead to enroll in the TESOL program in the language department of the public university. She followed her mother’s advice, although it wasn’t her first choice and she struggled during the first semesters in the program. She admits she wasn’t particularly motivated to learn English, and instead had been planning to work with young children in a public primary school.

Although this phenomenon links the pueblos to the outside world, the local to the global as it were, and provides a modicum of economic security, it also exacerbates many social problems, and undermines the intergenerational transmission of traditional cultural and linguistic practices.
