The 1959 Cryogenic Engineering convention Committee is happy to pre despatched the papers of the 1959 Cryogenic Engineering convention. we're lucky to have had the collage of California at Berkeley, Ca!., as our host for the 5th nationwide assembly of this type. The movement to the West Coast for this earlier Cryogenic Engineering convention used to be brought on partly through the massive focus of missile actions that are to be stumbled on there. reputation of cryogenic operations and strategies within the mis sile box is given in lots of of the incorporated papers. The collage of California was once definitely wen suited to any such assembly as this since it was once right here that a lot early paintings was once performed in cryogenics. This pioneering in cryogenics continues to be obtrusive this day within the operation of the 72-in. bub ble chamber on the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory. The Cryogenic Engineering convention salutes the missile and the cryogenic pioneers of the day past and this present day on the college of California. distinct thank you needs to visit Dr. D. N. Lyon from the Low-Temperature Laboratory of the college of California, who as chairman of the 1959 Cryogenic Engineering convention Committee has labored tirelessly to extend the stature of this convention. vii ACKNOWLEDGMENT The Cryogenic Engineering convention Committee is deeply thankful for the ongoing help and curiosity of the subsequent organisations who made the 1959 Cryogenic Engineering convention attainable. Are kept at pressures above atmospheric and contain either pure nitrogen or hydrogen gas atmospheres. Afairly extensive alarm system teIls us when pressures drop below predetermined safe limits and will shut down the hydrogen compressors whencertainalarm conditions are not corrected. The liquefier is operated from a central control room, where the operator has a continuous visual and recorded check on the operation of the plant. Finally, the entire hydrogen liquefier with the liquid storage system is a closed system, and under normal operating conditions little hydrogen gas escapes into the atmosphere.

1) and (3), the total power required is p = B2pri [7Tß(a 2 ~~y C2 -1J] , (5) where P is given in watts, B in webers per square meter,p in ohm-centimeters, and r i in meters. It can be shown that the coil proportions resulting in a minimum total power for a given inside radius and central field are a = 3 and ß = 4, giving a coil of the proportions shown in Fig. 1. Itis ofinterest to determine the additional power required to produce a given central field. for coils which have proportions different from a = 3 andß = 4.

055. 64 times smaller total coil volume. Heat Transfer Most efforts to cool colls have involved liquid coolants to take advantage of the high beat capacity. low pumping power requirement, and high heat transfer coefficients associated with boiling; however, inlarge-diametercoils, gas cooling becomes practical. An example of large cryogenic coils which might be used in a mirror machine experiment in present-day thermonuclear research is presented inorder to give some idea of the engineering problems involved.
